February 7th, 2013 Forecast

***WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FOR ALL OF CNY FROM FRIDAY MORNING TO SATURDAY MORNING***

High pressure over Canada will provide us with one more nice day before the weather becomes more interesting.
A significant winter storm is brewing for much of the northeast in the next few days. Low pressure will start to form in front of a weak upper level short wave over the Gulf of Mexico this evening and overnight. The low will begin to track up the east coast later Thursday night and will start to significantly strengthen as it reaches the Mid Atlantic.
At the same time, another area of low pressure will form over Colorado and will begin to move northeastward towards the Great Lakes by early Friday morning. This low pressure will combine with the storm moving up the east coast, and a significant nor'easter will be the end result as all the energy is transferred from the Colorado low to the east coast low.
The Colorado low will be out biggest concern. As of right now, snow accumulations look to be approaching a foot, especially in the north country. Snow totals over CNY depend on if enough warm air can intrude and form a mix of rain and snow, and a few models are slightly hinting at that possibility. The Boston area is looking at seeing snow totals over 2 feet after this nor'easter passes.
High pressure will build in for Sunday before another low pressure heads for the area Monday with a cold front.
