December 18th and 19th, 2010 Forecast

Record snowfall for the month of December could be set as early as the end of today for Syracuse. As of Thursday, we have received 69.5 inches for the month at the airport. The record is 70.3 inches, set back in 2000. It is only the 17th day of the month !

Tonight: The lake effect snow bands from Lake Ontario should mainly be east and northeast of the lake toward the Tug Hill and Watertown where 3 to 6 inches of snow should occur. In immediate Central New York and the Finger Lakes region, snow showers and flurries could affect the area from Lake Erie -- a coating to 1 inch of snow is possible in this area. Low temperatures will range from 16 degrees in the Catskill Mountains to 25 degrees near Lake Ontario. South-southwest winds 5 to 10 mph. The chance of snow is around 40 percent.

Saturday: Clouds with a stray flurry in the morning should give way to some breaks of sun. There will be some leftover snow showers for a while in Jefferson and Saint Lawrence counties. Highs will be near 30 degrees. Southwest winds 5 to 15 mph.

Sunday: There will be a coastal storm well to our southeast during the day. With this scenario, I am expecting a mix of sun and clouds with no more than a flurry. Look for a high around 28 degrees. Southwest winds 5 to 10 mph.

Monday: The coastal storm will stall offshore east of Cape Cod. It will be too far away to affect our weather, but it will provide a northwest wind flow. This will give way to lake effect clouds, flurries, and localized snow showers. The chance of snow is about 40 percent. The high temperature will be in the mid to upper 20s.
